The ELF logo was produced for NASA for the STS-87/USMP-4 Space Shuttle mission, November to December 1997.

From a post on FaceBook by Richard Pini: This all began when I received an email, on August 15, 1996, from Dennis Stocker at the NASA Lewis Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio. The subject line was "A proposal from NASA." (Which, if you know me at all, immediately grabbed my attention.) The message read, in part, "I would very much like your assistance in designing a logo for a Space Shuttle investigation named ELF, for Enclosed Laminar Flames. I named the experiment ELF, partly due to my enjoyment of mythology and fantasy literature. Therefore, the use of an elf in the logo seems more than natural. Now, I happen to also read and collect comic books, and have enjoyed your "Elfquest" books. With that in mind, I can think of no one better than you to develop the logo for the ELF investigation."
